System Description

Mitsubishi Electric’s Substation Division (SSD) began its industry leadership in Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), building its first in 1968. In 1973, it installed the first 500kV hybrid gas-insulated substation. Three years later, Mitsubishi Electric constructed the world's first 550kV fully gas insulated switchyard at the Ohi Nuclear Power Station, which is the largest nuclear power plant in Japan. Since then, more than 40,000 GIS bays have been installed in substations worldwide.

Complete turnkey substation installations in North America, developed in our Warrendale PA facility have been installed in urban, coastal and power plant environments.

72.5 kV to 800kV

Mitsubishi Electric GIS represents switchgear ranging from 72.5 kV to 800 kV and from single phase to three phase designs. Mitsubishi offers GIS based circuit breakers, GIS based switchgear and our vacuum based, chassis mounted HS-X switchgear.

The MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC SSD offering includes 36 to 72 kV vacuum-based switchgear and 72 kV to 800 kV Gas Insulated Substations. In addition, MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC SSD offers hybrid GIS from 145 kV to 550 kV. This equipment also is rated from 31.5 kA to 80 kA. This allows MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC SSD to design transformers and bushings to meet specific application requirements. Fast acting ground switches are also available for mounting on the assembly.
